Digital storyline

The concept of a digital storyline project sounds intriguing. It can be administered in much the same way as a real life storyline experience. There is however a question of where to publish the events and how to make students cooperate digitally. I personally suggest Wikispaces, or Wikidot for this purpose.

Storyline as a method was developed by teachers in Glasgow, Scotland, and has been adopted by Norwegian teachers partly because it makes adapted teaching ( tilpasset opplæring) possible and partly because it is motivationg and creates suspense. It can be described as a story developing in the classroom while students are learning. The teachers initially create a setting in which the students become characters.The story is made through tasks ( discussions, interview, problemsolving) and surprising events that carry the story onward, until there is time to stop, even though the story might continue forever......

Teacher: The teachers' main task is to create an atmosphere and a frame for the project in terms of the traditional where and when. The teachers also decides upon a topic which relates to the national curriculum and a local interpretation of aims and objectives. It can be a good idea to show only certain objectives/tasks in the beginning and then leave others as a surprise as the story develops.

Then there are tasks to perform, which require cooperation and digital skills as well as skills in the subject which is chosen from the curriculum. Finally, assessment, success criteria and evaluation of the project must also be included throughout the whole period.

The student: Should show his or her capacity to cooperate and to respond to the various tasks he or she will face as the story grows. It is also important to use former knowledge and to gain new knowledge in the subject to solve the problems that arise.

Possible settings:
  • Create your own character in the following setting: private domain, official domain, educational domain, vocational domain (School, campus, shop, family, work place)
  • Create your own blog, web site, twitter membership or join an existing forum: digital platform ( blog, twitter, wikispaces, wikidot etc)
  • Relate your fiction to reality: create links or hyperlinks to existing web sites and other forums ( Facebook, painterforum etc.)
  • Produce text ( oral, written, multimodal) in a forum related to your setting: web publishing ( newspapers, Wikispedia, official website, forum, etc.)
  • Cooperate with other users on the Internet: web communication ( forum, chat, skype etc, e-mail )
  • Conference with a content: digital conference ( net meeting, skype, Facebook, etc.)
